Microsoft trying to squash Yahoo!

I know, it’s been all over the internet the last couple of days, and to be honest I wasn’t going to write anything about it. However, it is important, and it is something we should be wary about.

The internet is a place that has grown from users needs and wants. The websites that dominate the internet are, in general, user supported. Sure, business is generated from them and millions are made, but the reasons they are there in the first place is because of the communities need. What makes this latest move by Microsoft a potentially bad thing, is history.. If they’re prepared to bulldoze another company in their quest for global domination where’s it going to stop? Will Microsoft bring their monopolistic attitudes to the internet? The only people that will benefit if this happens is surely going to be Microsoft and Microsoft alone.

Microsoft of course need to have a bigger web presence with MSN & live being a good example of how not to have one. Obviously by acquiring Yahoo! it effectively acquires a lot of users and a proven search engine – plus all the other things under Yahoo’s belt. But then don’t Microsoft write software? With Vista getting so much bad press, surely they should be looking to get the primary side to their business sorted before embarking on anything else?
